Custom Cabinetry Renovation Built to Withstand a High-Moisture Pool Environment

To support the daily operations of a long‑standing community facility, McKinstry’s Special Projects Group (SPG) provided custom cabinetry and casework for the Sheridan Beach Community Club. It is a historic neighborhood swim club serving families in Lake Forest Park, Washington. The project focused on fabricating and installing new cabinets and countertops for the club’s office space within the community clubhouse.

Though modest in scale, the work plays an important role for the club. It is a place that has served the neighborhood for decades. The office renovation is part of a broader set of capital improvements timed with a milestone year, marking the club’s 90th anniversary and the 65th anniversary of the Sheridan Beach Swim Team. The updated space supports daily operations for staff and lifeguards, with swim team members passing through the office each day, while contributing to a refreshed, cohesive look across the facility.

Durable Design for a Demanding Environment

Located adjacent to a pool and lake, the clubhouse experiences frequent moisture, standing water and heavy use during the summer season. Previous cabinetry from an earlier renovation did not hold up in the highmoisture environment.

McKinstry’s carpentry team addressed these challenges by fabricating new cabinets using durable plywood construction rather than particle board. The cabinets are elevated on plastic feet to withstand moisture and prevent deterioration over time. Design details, including structural supports that gang cabinets together and reinforced countertop surfaces, were incorporated to ensure stability and longevity in a high-traffic environment.

Materials were selected to align with finishes already present in other areas of the clubhouse, particularly the locker rooms. This approach creates visual continuity throughout the facility. It is something the club says never existed in the office space before.

Craftsmanship and Community Connection

The cabinetry was custom-built in McKinstry’s carpentry shop by a small, dedicated team, with individual components fabricated and assembled over several days. Installation was targeted for mid-March, allowing the space to be ready ahead of the busy summer season.

The project also carries a personal connection for Kyle Victor, business unit manager for SPG. He grew up going to the Sheridan Beach Community Club and now has children who use the facility. His familiarity with the space helped shape the project approach and reinforced the importance of longterm durability. “I’ve been coming here since I was a kid, and this place means a lot to the community,” Kyle said. “This update creates something that holds up over time and brings the office in line with the rest of the clubhouse.”

Expanding Capabilities

While McKinstry’s SPG carpentry team regularly supports internal projects and specialty scopes, this project highlights the group’s growing capabilities in custom casework and finished carpentry. From fabrication through installation, the Sheridan Beach Community Club project demonstrates McKinstry’s ability to deliver high-quality, detail-driven work — even on highly specific projects — with the same level of care and craftsmanship as greater efforts.
